vivo X50 Pro Deep Review: The World’s First Gimbal Camera Phone

Share

vivo’s goal this year for the X series is to become a true company brand flagship. Specifically, this task requires the X50 and X50 Pro in the series to meet the industry challenges. The Pro model has an overhead micro pan-tilt halo, and normal X50 version also has the combination of OIS and a custom-made sensor. Can the two devices really make vivo one of the most recognized photography tools? You can find the answer through the post.

The Gimbal Main Camera on vivo X50 Pro

The Gimbal Main Camera is the most well-known selling point of this generation of X series, but as mentioned above, in fact, only the X50 Pro is the only one of the three new machines equipped with this set of shooting assistance solutions derived from APEX 2020.

For its structure and the technology used, the author has previously published a detailed introduction. To put it simply, its meaning is to rely on the overall movement of the photoreceptor and lens to improve the shooting effect of the device in dark, light and sports scenes.

Although vivo’s micro-head can only achieve the anti-vibration effect of “two-axis rotation” on the X-axis and Y-axis, the anti-vibration angle of “plus or minus 3 degrees” is indeed better than the optical anti-shake solution used by general high-end machines, And is considered a lot more powerful.

In addition to making recording and capturing more stable video/stills, it also further extends the exposure time, and this allows vivo to strive for greater flexibility when selecting the X50 Pro main camera sensor. They finally adopted the IMX598 CMOS, which you can think of as a minor upgrade of the mainstream 48MP module IMX586 last year.

Its size is still 1/2 inch, which is not too big in today’s market. The main improvement is to increase the sensitivity of about 10% after replacing the filter.

Superb Night Camera Ehanced capabilities for low-light photography on vivo X50 Pro

Under the combination of the two, the X50 Pro’s low-light camera capabilities are among the best in its class.

When using the night scene mode, the author can usually trigger a handheld shooting time of 3 seconds to 5 seconds. In situations like 5 seconds, the phone will even automatically recognize it as a “tripod mode.”

The exposure time can reach a spectrum of 0.4 seconds, and the photos taken have excellent dynamic range, detail and purity, and the saturation will be closer to what the naked eye can see.

Even when using the normal mode to shoot night scenes, as long as the hands are not very shaky, the device will appropriately extend the exposure time according to the situation.

Compared with the general high-end positioning products, the X50 Pro’s light and dark output rate is significantly higher.

In daytime shooting, the white balance of this phone has quite good accuracy and multi-shot uniformity. The imaging color style is bright and the exposure control is also very appropriate.

There is a set of main camera captures blessed by Micro PTZ. In the past, I often had a headache when facing scenes such as cats, dogs, or wind blowing flowers, but shooting with X50 Pro can effectively reduce missed opportunities or repeated shots.

This advantage is also vividly reflected in the video tracking focus, the subject can be locked on, even if it disappears from the frame for a short time, the back focus can be quickly re-aligned.

In terms of stability, the author tried it himself, and the hand shake caused by movements of considerable amplitude such as small steps and fast running, the micro-head can have a significant offsetting effect.

In addition, due to the reduced dependence on electronic shock resistance, the loss of viewing angle due to cutting is considerably less.

It is worth mentioning that when the X50 Pro is recording in a low-light environment, although the overall brightness of the picture is not outstanding due to the size of the photoreceptor, the details, colors, and noise control are still very good.

The existence of the micro-head also makes the lens movement smoother, and the photographer can move more easily without adversely affecting the frame (the above cat film was taken by the author in a cramped environment while squatting and arching his back).

Correspondingly, the effect of Super Anti-vibration mode becomes very insignificant, and sometimes even looks more unnatural.

As for the other three cameras in the multi-camera system, the ultra-wide-angle end of 8MP has a mediocre performance, the 50mm portrait of 13MP and the 5X periscope telephoto of 8MP have certain usability, but in general, the significance is more to cover the focal length. It’s not as dazzling as the main camera.

You can't resist the photography redefined of vivo X50 Pro

As we know both the gimbal camera on X50 seires currently unique, and the price difference is not that huge, the biggest rivals of X50 and X50 Pro are precisely each other.

If you want to choose between these two models, I personally think that Pro will be more suitable for ordinary consumers. Its appearance, feel, and performance are good enough. While the micro-head is for you to show off and provide topicality, it also improves the effect of night shooting and video recording.

Pro+ is relatively more suitable for users who value photography. Especially its color style is easy to hit people’s hearts at once.

Of course, Pro+ is also stronger in terms of performance, display, and sound quality, but these may not necessarily constitute the decisive factor while buying the product itself.
